4K REMASTER
“We originally filmed TWW using a Panavised Sony HDW-F900, which captured picture at 23.98 FPS with a resolution of 1920 x 1080p . But because computers were not capable of editing raw HD media in 2004, we had to edit the movie using lower resolution proxy files that were down converted into 29.97 FPS Interlaced Video at 1280 x 720i.
And because the vast majority of theaters at that time were only capable of projecting Digital Content in Standard Definition, we decided that it would be okay to finish the movie at 29.97 and 1280 x 720i.”
“But as we approached the 20th Anniversary of the movie, we decided that it was finally time to finish TWW at the highest resolution possible.
So we pulled all of the original HDCam Masters and DAT audio cassettes out of our storage, and we contracted with a local Post Facility to ingest, encode and export all our media as ProRes 422 QuickTime Files.
This got us back to our original shooting resolution of 1920 x 1080 Progressive media.”
“Next, we discovered a brand new video editing application called Topaz Video AI that could Up-Scale all of our original Camera Dailies from 1920 x 1080p to 3820 x 2160p using Artificial Intelligence - and the results were near perfect!”
“In the past, the only way to Up-Scale Media was to export it out of an editing platform - but that would just double or even quadruple each individual pixel. And that would create a very soft and blurry final image.
Topaz Video AI actually uses Machine Learning to intelligently generate all of the additional pixels that are required to create a 4K image. And it looks like we actually shot the project with 4K ARRI or RED camera!”
“Now that our dailies were in 4K, we had import all of the media into Adobe Premiere and sync the Dailies with the original Production Audio. Then it was time to Over-Cut the entire movie all over again. “
And after a few months of hard work and effort, we were able to completely restore and remaster the movie - and the image and sound quality are simply amazing.”
